15 productive things you can do during lockdown

South Africa is currently in a lockdown due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, we may be feeling overwhelmed, scared or uncertain about what lies ahead. We are also adjusting to working from home (if we can), as well as keeping our kids safe and entertained while having to stay contained.

While we are all staying at home, working towards flattening the curve of the outbreak to help our healthcare system cope with the influx of patients due to the virus.

The Kai Thai family compiled a list of activities they are doing at home to help you keep the cabin fever at bay while you’re doing your bit to help keep your fellow South Africans safe.

1. Learn a new language

Learn a new language

Remember all those times you said you’d like to learn a new language like Italian, Spanish or one of our official 11 languages in our country but just couldn’t find the time. Here’s your chance. With a wide selection of YouTube videos and online tutorials at your disposal, why not use this time to learn a completely new language.

2. Get fit and strong!

Doing a workout at home

Working out at home can be just as beneficial for both your mind and body. Why not try out different types of workouts over the course of the next few weeks and find that workout that really works for you. Use Apps, Google search and YouTube to help you with some routines to do at home.

3. Reorganise and clear out your cupboards

Re-organising your cupboards

Find some time and attention to sorting out your clothes, declutter your home, ditching items that are too small or too big. Use this time to donate your unwanted clothes to people who are in need and at the same time get inspired by new outfits or rediscover an old favourite.

 4. Read a book

Reading a book with a cup of coffee

Time to dust off that book that has been on your shelf for quite some time or if you are a more of an electronics person and own a kindle/e-reader, there are plenty free books available currently.  Escape to a different world for a few hours. Hot drink and blanket is our serving suggestion.

5. Get in the kitchen and start baking

Indulge your sweet or savory tooth and try a make a baking masterpiece of your own. Celebrities like David Beckham have taken to social media to show off their skills.

6. Clear out your kitchen cupboards

Check the expiration dates on those canned goods at the back, clear out that junk drawer you’ve been avoiding, or go the whole hog and colour coordinate your spice rack! Take this opportunity to put together a food parcel for someone who is in need. Get your kitchen back to how you like it – neat and tidy.

7. Get your fingers dirty in the garden

Are you spending all your time indoors and in front of screens? Transform your garden into a tranquil space… Time to get into the beds and pull out all the weeds, replant your pot plants, or mow the lawn.

8. Learn how to knit

Pick up your needles and take the time to hone a new skill like knitting. Not just for grandmas, knitting is considered incredibly therapeutic and practical.

9. Tackle a puzzle

Take your eyes off the screens while you tackle a tricky 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle. Hopefully, there are no missing pieces!

10. Get your DIY on

DIY during quarantine

Take the time to tackle some interior improvements – be that painting your walls, upholstering old furniture, or rearranging a room. Remember health and safety at all times!

11. Call or Skype your family

Video call with family and friends

The chances are you’re not the only one that’s self-isolating and people will appreciate a friendly chat or text message to let them know you’re thinking of them. Set up games, quizzes, and challenges that you can do online together!

12. Play board games

If you’re lucky enough to be in quarantine with your family, embrace some old school entertainment and crack out the board games for some light competition. Monopoly should be chosen at your own risk.

13. Have some fun on TikTok

Dancing on the TIkTok app

Seems like all our staff is on TikTok right now, this social media platform can provide hours of entertainment. Kai Thai team are showing off their dance routines and making them look easy!

14. Further your studies

Doing online studies during lock down

Devoting some of our quarantine time to self-education makes sense. Besides helping to bolster your career during this economic uncertainty, learning a new skill can give you a sense of control that will help cope with anxiety engendered by the epidemic. I am very impressed with how many of our staff are trying to increase their knowledge and skills.

15. Write a novel

Attempting to write a novel

The idea of writing a novel is one that can often seem daunting. How many of us have opened Word, stared at a blank page for a while, and then admitted defeat? Enough is enough. Writing can be an incredibly therapeutic practice and one which can help to pass the time. Who knows, you might even be the next J.K. Rowling?

These are just some of the activities the Kai Thai team is attempting while we still under quarantine. We hope this helps with some of your boredom!

Till we see you through our doors again! please stay safe and look after each other.
