“The best place for crispy duck in Fourways is Kai Thai Restaurant. Kai’s recipes have been handed down to her through just the right family connections and she has brought them all the way to South Africa. The duck with its sweet, crispy skin, stir-fried in oyster sauce with mushrooms, chilli and garlic, is great as its infallible classic green curry. And, the best of all, it’s open late until late. Really late. Past midnight-late. Sweet mercy!”

The Authentic Experience at Kai Thai Restaurants

Welcome to the Kai Thai experience. Thailand, formerly known as Siam, is a country that captivates and charms all the primary senses. With its bustling cities, breath-taking natural heritage, sweeping history and gentle, happy people, Thailand is a blend of both the ancient and the modern. The country lies at the Southeast Asian crossroads of China and India and, throughout history, has absorbed many migrants from these two nations as well as from the neighbouring countries of Laos, Myanmar (formerly Burma), Kampuchea (Cambodia) and Malaysia. With Thailand’s position in the very heart of the Southeast Asia, its rich culinary art has been influenced by the cuisines of many varied and colourful nations.

Your Hosts Ron & Kai Welcome You

The food we serve here at the Kai Thai Restaurants reflect the strong family tradition of Thai cooking, which has been preserved in authenticity as it was handed down from generation to generation. As testament to our dedication to perfection, we are most proud to say that Kai Thai has been the winner for best Thai restaurant every single year running since 2005!

Kai Thai Restaurant: About Thai Food

food-main.pngThe food of Thailand is startlingly bold and imaginative. Artfully created to appeal to all the senses, it combined beautiful presentation with fragrant aromas, contrasting yet complimenting flavours and textures, and often fearsome chilli-heat! Fresh ingredients are key in the concocting of delicious Thai food and, with most dishes prepared just before serving, their nutritional value and crisp, fresh tastes are retained. Vegetables and fruit play a major part in all meals and with the country’s long coastline and great rivers, Thailand’s variety of fish and seafood is a delight to culinary enthusiasts.

Thai people of Thailand believe that every dish should present a harmony of the four fundamental tastes: fiery, salty, sweet and sour with no single flavour completely overpowering the others. If a curry is hot with chillies, it will always be toned down by the rich creaminess of coconut milk or the cooling tang of aromatic herbs such as lemon grass or lime leaves. If you aren’t a fan of chilli heat, then don’t worry; at the Kai Thai Restaurants, we serve our chilli and curry dishes with an option for mild, medium and - for those customers who prefer it – hot!

Kai Thai Restaurant: How to Eat Thai Food

In Thailand, eating is a national past-time and an occasion to enjoy the company of your friends and family. There is a definite art to the enjoyment of this incredible cuisine that might seem quite strange to what we are taught in the Western world!

Here are some things you might like to know about the custom of eating Thai food:

  • No meal is complete without rice, Thailand’s staple food. Thailand is one of the world’s great rice-growing nations and consequently, most dishes are consumed with heaps of steaming fragrant rice.
  • A family of four might prepare anywhere between three and six vastly different dishes, such as a curry, a spicy salad, noodles, a soup, a whole fish, fried pork, vegetables and a myriad of other delicious dishes. All are shared, with each person taking a few spoonfuls of each dish to enjoy with their rice. At the Kai Thai Restaurants, you are more than welcome to order a meal for yourself to enjoy, or a variety of dishes to share with your whole table!
  • It may come as a surprise, but Thais do not normally eat with chopsticks! Only a fork and a spoon are customarily used and needed to enjoy the many different meals prepared. However, at the Kai Thai Restaurants, we understand that chopsticks are half the fun in enjoying Asian food and so we do encourage their use!
  • All Thai dishes are cooked from scratch with only fresh ingredients. Absolutely no meal is pre-cooked or pre-heated, so please be patient as Kai and her staff prepare your meal individually. Relax and enjoy the ambiance of the Kai Thai Restaurants; we prefer not to ‘turn’ our tables, but rather enjoy your company and patronage for the whole evening!
